Local Wildlife Facts
This area has now seen the successful re-introduction of BUZZARDS and RED KITES.
There is, as of Summer 2011, a 2 foot long golden carp (giant goldfish!) living in the River Rib in Thundridge.
In 2005 an escaped domestic giant white rabbit successfully managed to breed in the southern banks of "The Paddocks". Its progeny (white bunnies!) managed to survive a year in the wild, despite their non feral behaviour, before being eaten by a fox. I have very sweet photos of them.
This year at least one hobby has been spotted locally. The original name for the very popular football game SUBBUTEO was "The Hobby" but this name was turned down by the patents office. Instead the inventor, whose favourite bird was the hobby, called it SUBBUTEO being its Latin name (falco subbuteo). The game's logo is a hobby's head.

During March 2012 we were visited by a beautiful Little Egret. This welcome visitor from southern Europe could easily be seen with its snowy white feathers along the Rib by the Thundridge sports field and allotments. Let's hope that it enjoyed it's visit and returns again next year!
We are now, as of April 2012, host to at least one breeding pair of kingfishers along the River Rib. We wish them well with their new offspring!
