Hanbury Manor - Thundridge (Poles)

Lady Margaret Pole

Born in 1473, Margaret Pole (née Plantagenet) was the daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, niece of both Edward IV and Richard III, and the only woman, apart from Anne Boleyn, to hold a peerage title in her own right during the 16th century. Some suggest that with becoming 'Lady of the manor of Ware' in 1513 the area known as Poles, now Hanbury Manor could have been one of her homes. There is still uncertainty about when exactly a house appeared here?
