Hanbury Family Thundridge
The Hanbury family arrived in Thundridge in 1800 in form of Sampson and his wife Agatha. Sampson being 31 years old and Agatha 24 years old. Sampson was the fifth son of Osgood and Mary Hanbury of Holfield Grange, Coggeshall, Essex. His unusual name came from his mother's father 'Sampson Lloyd', a banker of Goldicott House, Birmingham. The Hanbury family derive their from the parish of Hanbury in Worcestershire where they settled as early as the fourteenth century. This would make sense as there is reference to quite a few 'Hanbury's' living in Wales and the west of England.
Agatha was the daughter of Richard Gurney of Keswick Hall, Norfolk. The Gurneys were a rich and well known Quaker banking family.
