A little bit of history
The 'Sow and Pigs' was formally known as the 'Five Horses shoes' and 1660 was run by William Hatton, who had kept an alehouse in
the village 12 years before this - which was closed for disorderliness!
In 1758 it was the 'Five Horse-shoes', then 'The Fox' and then again 'The Five Horseshoes'.
In 1777 it was purchased by a Hoddesdon brewer and soon after it became known as the 'Sow and Pigs', probably named after ancient game called 'My Sow's Pigged' (not to be confused with the modern game 'Pass the Pigs').
Also by the look of this new photo it would appear that the white feather edge boarding on either end are additions to the original building, plus the south end (left of picture) the brick work and roof is also slightly different?
Recently refurbished to a high standard offering excellent ales and food. Recently added covered outside area for Alfresco eating.
